Asso.subsea has been selected to execute the nearshore installation of cables in three projects of TenneT’s 2 GW program: BalWin4, LanWin1 and LanWin5. The works will be carried out off the northwest coast of Germany, off the island of Baltrum, and will run from 2027 to 2029.
Specialized coastal cable installation
Each of these projects comprises the laying of two HVDC power cables, a metallic return cable and a fiber optic cable. The coastal operation, which requires complex logistics and highly precise execution, includes the transport of cables from ports in Germany or the Netherlands and their subsequent installation in tidally sensitive areas.
The CLV Atalanti, owned by Asso Group, will be specifically modified to operate with a four-cable bundle configuration. Such adaptations will allow for greater efficiency in laying within intertidal zones, using techniques such as beaching with spud cans and wet storage of cable ends.
The execution of these projects is led by Jan De Nul as prime contractor, with TenneT as power system operator and end customer. This award strengthens Asso.subsea’s strategic position as a reliable supplier of subsea solutions, while expanding its network of strategic collaborations.
Working offshore Germany presents particular challenges due to tidal variability and the need for precise integration with HVDC transmission systems. Asso.subsea will provide subsea engineering expertise to ensure the successful connection of these offshore platforms to the mainland.
The BalWin4, LanWin1 and LanWin5 projects are part of TenneT ‘s strategy to strengthen the renewable energy infrastructure in Northern Europe. With the participation of Asso.subsea, a critical link for the integration of large-scale offshore wind farms into the continental grid is consolidated.
