Wall Climbing Robot for Ship Inspection Gets ClassNK Approval

The small “wall-climbing robot” designed for ship inspection and maintenance has successfully completed a demonstration test. This robot is the product of a joint creation of Mitsui OSK Lines, Sumitomo Heavy Industries and MOL Ship Management , supported by Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) through its innovation certification program.

An innovative and great design of the wall climbing robot

This device is capable of navigating both vertical and curved surfaces, accessing hard-to-reach areas, and making accurate measurements down to 0.01 mm , eliminating the need for scaffolding and reducing operational risks and construction costs.

In addition to improving safety in ship inspection , the robot can operate in confined spaces , decreasing the risks associated with oxygen deficiency. In the following video, we can see that the demonstration includes navigation tests and obtaining images and measurements in the hold of a ship , highlighting the robot’s ability to perform tasks that would be complicated for more conventional models.

With the validation of ClassNK , the MOL development team plans to continue improving the technology and functionality of the robot, as well as explore more applications in the field of digital inspection and evaluation based on the data collected.
