South Korean shipping major HMM has completed methanol bunkering for its first methanol-powered container vessel, HMM Green , at the Port of Shanghai, where 2,900 tonnes of ISCC-EU certified green methanol were delivered to the 9,000 TEU container vessel while simultaneously handling container operations.
HMM’s new vessel was fueled with methanol
The bunkering operation follows HMM ‘s memorandum of understanding ( MoU ) with Shanghai International Port Group ( SIPG ), the operator of all public terminals at the Port of Shanghai, to collaborate on the supply of clean marine fuel, specifically focusing on methanol and LNG bunkering.
The new vessel is part of the fleet of nine vessels ordered from HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries and HJ Shipbuilding & Construction in February 2023. The shipping company is expected to gradually receive the remaining eight vessels next year, in line with its fleet expansion plan.
The HMM Green vessel will be deployed in HMM’s service in Far East Asia, India, and the Mediterranean Sea ( FIM ). The company also plans to acquire around 70 green vessels by 2030 and establish a carbon-neutral ecosystem across all shipping segments by 2045.
