The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB) has given the go-ahead for the establishment of the world’s first ammonia supply terminal, a joint initiative of Yara Clean Ammonia (a branch of Yara International), Azane and Fjord Base, located in Florø.

This pioneering project aims to position ammonia as a viable, safe and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. fossil fuels in the in the maritime transport sector.

The DSB’s endorsement is a crucial step towards the adoption of ammonia as a fuel that reduces the carbon footprint of maritime shipping. Yara points out that, despite the growing interest in ammonia as a clean ship fuel, the final link in the supply chain, connecting production to ship supply, had not yet been realized.

“With this project, Yara Clean Ammonia, Azane and Fjord Base have demonstrated that the planned terminal can meet the stringent safety standards set by the DSB,” Yara said.

What will the ammonia supply terminal look like?

The planned terminal will have a stationary barge capable of storing up to 1,000 m³ (or 650 tons) of ammonia with low environmental impact. The authorization granted allows for up to 416 operations per year, many of which will be for ammonia bunkering for ships that frequently visit Fjord Base in Florø.

The next step for Yara, Azane and Fjord Base will be to work with project partners to get approval from the local municipality before making a final investment decision. Magnus Ankarstrand, president of Yara Clean Ammonia, expressed his gratitude for the permit, highlighting the role of ammonia in the decarbonization of shipping. decarbonization of shipping and its potential as an emission-free marine fuel.

For his part, Steinar Kostøl of Azane remarked on the significance of this permit for the future of ammonia as a marine fuel, highlighting the encouraging safety zones established for its storage. Stig Førde of Fjord Base welcomed DSB’s decision, noting the terminal’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Importantly, Yara Clean Ammonia and Azane have plans to expand a network of ammonia terminals in Scandinavia, demonstrating the advantages of ammonia as a clean, safe and reliable marine energy source.

The approval of the Florø ammonia bunkering terminal symbolizes progress towards cleaner fuel solutions for shipping and highlights the importance of public-private collaboration to achieve sustainability goals. This project highlights the potential of ammonia as a key element in the energy transition of the shipbuilding sector, opening up new possibilities for a greener and more efficient industry.
