Start-up company Ammobia has closed a $7.5 million financing round backed by key industrial investors such as Shell Ventures, Chevron Technology Ventures and ALIAD, the venture capital arm of Air Liquide. The deal marks a decisive step towards the industrial validation of its technology to produce ammonia ammonia more cleanly and efficiently.

New pathway in ammonia production

The Haber-Bosch process has been the standard for producing ammonia for more than a century. However, its reliance on temperatures of 500 °C and pressures of 200 bar implies high energy consumption and accounts for about 2% of global CO₂ emissions. Ammobia proposes an alternative that significantly reduces these extreme conditions through new advances in catalysis and modular design.

Ammobia’s technological proposal stands out for operating at ten times lower pressures and temperatures up to 150 °C lower. This not only improves energy efficiency, but also enables a reduction of up to 50% in capital costs. In addition, its units are modular and can be switched on and off depending on the availability of renewable energy. renewable energy and deployed close to consumption centers, avoiding centralized infrastructures.

Applications beyond fertilizer

While ammonia is widely known for its use in fertilizers, Ammobia is targeting a broader spectrum. Its technology could supply the growing demand in sectors such as shipping, where alternative fuels are being explored. alternative fuels are being explored to reduce the carbon footprint. It is also emerging as an energy storage vector and base chemical in industry.

With this investment, the company will develop its first pilot plant and select the first customers for industrial testing. The validation of its technology in real conditions will be key to consolidate its position as a viable option compared to traditional methods.
