Netherlands-based start-up Airturb has developed an innovative solution that combines solar and wind power in a single unit, thus offering an efficient and sustainable alternative to conventional energy.
First of all, among the advantages of this technology, is the combination of both energy sources, which improves the energy efficiency of the system. Wind energy is mainly produced at night and on windy days, while solar energy is produced during the day and in fair weather conditions.
In addition, the joint use of solar and wind energy increases the availability of energy in the system. While solar power is more constant and predictable, wind power is more variable and can fluctuate based on weather conditions.
Another advantage of combining solar and wind power is that they can be adapted to different environmental conditions. For example, in areas where there is not enough sun throughout the year, the wind system can compensate for the lack of solar energy. On the other hand, in areas where there is little wind, the solar system can provide the necessary energy.
Get unmatched efficiency and sustainability with modern Airturb technology
Airturb’s hybrid wind-solar system is capable of generating up to 500 W of power and consists of a vertical axis wind turbine with a modified Savonius helical shape and four monocrystalline solar panels of 30 W each.
This new hybrid system is suitable for rooftop and off-grid applications, and has a roof load of 131 kg/m2. The solar panel is made up of a galvanized steel and rubber structure with dimensions of 1.14×1.14 meters and 20 mm thick, which can house four solar panels with a power of 30 W each.
The Airturb system can be installed associated with other installations and the network or completely independently.
On the other hand, the wind turbine measures 1.8×1.14×1.14 meters and weighs 70 kg. It has a ballast weight ranging from 70 kg to 100 kg and can operate in temperatures between -25ºC and 60ºC. The wind power system also includes a 300 W permanent magnetic flux axial (PMSA) alternator that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy, characterized as three-phase alternating current. The hybrid system features a 500W output power DualVolt Hybrid inverter, measuring 540x430x139mm and weighing 25kg.
Airturb offers two versions of the system, one with solar panels and one without. The company hopes that its wind-solar hybrid system will become an attractive solution for households looking to reduce their dependence on the electricity grid and become more self-sufficient. In addition, its compact design and easy installation make it ideal for places with limited space.
