The new Acciona Energy’s new Forty Mile wind farmForty Mile wind farm is now operational in the province of Alberta, Canada. This infrastructure is the largest that the company has developed in North America to date.

Forty Mile achieves 280 megawatts with German technology

The wind farm has 49 Nordex turbines, each with an output of 5.7 MW, for a total capacity of 280 megawatts. These units are elevated on 108-meter towers and provide constant generation in one of the windiest areas of Canada.

It is estimated that Forty Mile will avoid the emission of approximately 600,000 tons of CO₂ per year, a figure comparable to planting 25 million trees. In addition to its environmental contribution, the project has left a relevant footprint on the regional economy: during its construction phase it generated more than 200 direct jobs and currently supports 25 permanent jobs.

Community and fiscal contribution

Acciona Energy estimates that Forty Mile will generate more than 133 million Canadian dollars in taxes and fees for local communities. Part of this return translates into donations to social organizations such as Bow Island Food Bank and Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society, reinforcing the project’s social commitment.

With the commissioning of Forty Mile, the company reaches 3.45 gigawatts of installed renewable capacity in North America. This figure includes solar, solar thermal, windsolar, solar thermal, wind and storage projects. The company thus reinforces its position as one of the main players in the renewable energy sector on the continent.
