During RenewableUK‘s Floating Offshore Wind Conference, the FLOW Ports Alliance, an initiative that seeks to align the main European ports specialized in floating offshore wind energy, was officially launched. This strategic alliance is made up of Associated British Ports(UK), BrestPort (France) and Shannon Foynes Port(Ireland).

European ports powered by floating wind energy

The alliance aims to facilitate the standardization of operations, share experiences and accelerate the implementation of pilot energy projects. All within the European legal framework, ensuring effective collaboration without compromising the competitiveness of the sector.

ABP plans to invest more than 500 million pounds sterling in Port Talbot, Wales, to turn it into a logistics center of reference in the Celtic Sea. The plan includes the generation of skilled employment and the attraction of foreign direct investment.

Simultaneously, BrestPort continues its growth with an investment of 250 million euros for the development of its Marine Renewable Energy Terminal, which will include a 400-meter quay and more than 50 hectares of operational area, with full capacity planned for 2027.

In Ireland, Shannon Foynes Port Authority stands out for its unique natural conditions, with deep water and wide open spaces close to the Atlantic’s wind resources. It is also emerging as the country’s main logistics hub, with the potential to channel up to 30 GW of offshore wind energy by 2050.

With this alliance, the three ports intend to build a network of port infrastructure with the capabilities to respond to the growing demand for floating wind energyThe three ports will be able to install turbines in deep waters farther from the shore.
