The Port of Rotterdam has taken a decisive step towards the decarbonization of its port operations. decarbonization of its port operations by selecting ABB to lead the design, supply and installation of the world’s most ambitious shore power system. With a total capacity exceeding 100 MVA, this infrastructure will be operational from the second half of 2028.
Shore power in Rotterdam for strategic terminals
The project, promoted by Rotterdam Shore Power (a joint initiative of the Port of Rotterdam and Eneco), will supply electricity to three of the main container terminals: APM Terminals, Maasvlakte II, Maasvlakte II and Maasvlakte III. Maasvlakte IIHutchison Ports ECT Delta and Hutchison Ports ECT Euromax. In total, 35 connection points will be installed, enabling 32 container ships to be connected to the power supply. container ships to connect simultaneously to connect simultaneously while at berth.
This shore power deployment seeks to align port with regulation FuelEU Maritime, which will require all passenger and container ships over 5,000 gross tons to use shore power in European ports from 2030. This system is estimated to reduce annual CO₂ emissions by approximately 96,000 metric tons.
Integrated technology and operational efficiency
ABB will supply prefabricated modular systems that will facilitate installation and minimize disruptions to port activity. The solution will include the SCADA system for real-time monitoring and control, as well as features for accurate energy billing. These features will enable efficient management of energy consumption and increased traceability.
Thanks to this infrastructure, ships will be able to shut down their auxiliary engines while in port, reducing not only emissions but also environmental noise. This change will transform air quality and working conditions in one of Europe’s busiest logistics areas.
The contract also includes long-term maintenance agreements for each of the terminals. This project consolidates ABB’s role as a key supplier of power solutions for the maritime industry and reinforces the leadership of the Port of Rotterdam.
