In a new push for energy asset transformation, Tecnimont, a subsidiary of the MAIRE Group, was awarded a $50 million contract to develop the rehabilitation study for the Guaracara refinery complex, located in Point a Pierre, Trinidad and Tobago.

This project includes a comprehensive technical assessment of the refinery’s units and equipment, with capacity at around 150,000 barrels per day. The analysis will include reviewing system integrity, identifying critical areas for modernization, and validating currently installed technologies against long-term operational objectives.

Technical assessment at the Guaracara refinery

In addition to the structural assessment, the contract scope includes a detailed analysis of the complex’s energy and environmental performance. Engineering solutions will also be developed for advanced water intake and cooling systems, aligned with international standards.

As a result of this phase, Tecnimont Services will prepare preliminary capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operating expenditure (OPEX) estimates, which are essential to define the feasibility of the renewal and restart of the asset’s operations.

A scalable project toward engineering and construction phases

The contract covers execution of phases 1 and 2 of the rehabilitation study, with completion expected in early 2027. Subsequently, the project could move on to basic engineering (FEED) stages and EPC contracts, also including operations and maintenance services.

This phased approach makes it possible to structure the complex’s modernization on solid technical and financial criteria, reducing risks and optimizing decision-making for future investments.

Regional expansion and modernization of energy assets

MAIRE notes that this contract strengthens its presence in the Caribbean and Central America, consolidating its geographic diversification strategy. The company also underscores the importance of modernization initiatives to turn existing facilities into more efficient assets with improved environmental performance.

In parallel, the project is shaping up as a driver of local development, with the potential to boost industrial activity, create jobs, and strengthen technical capabilities in Trinidad and Tobago.
