Boosting the Energy Transition in the North Sea

German energy company RWE has obtained key approval to develop Nordseecluster B, the second phase of its mega wind project in the North Sea. The authorization, granted by Germany’s Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, enables progress toward executing one of the country’s largest offshore infrastructures.

This development is part of a total 1.6 GW cluster, positioning the project as a strategic node within Germany’s energy transition. The most relevant aspect lies in its modular scale: the combination of phases optimizes investments, logistics, and grid connection—an approach increasingly replicated across Europe.

Located in the North Sea, dozens of kilometers from the islands of Borkum and Juist, the project leverages highly stable wind conditions. This location maximizes the capacity factor, vital for ensuring financial returns and generation stability.

Modular Strategy Accelerates Deployment and Reduces Risks

The first phase, Nordseecluster A, already under construction, will deliver 660 MW and serve as the operational base for expansion. With all foundations installed, turbine installation will begin in summer, with grid connection scheduled for 2027.

The real differentiator is Nordseecluster B, which will add an additional 900 MW. Component manufacturing is already underway, demonstrating an early execution strategy that reduces supply chain risks—one of the main bottlenecks in the offshore sector.

Foundation installation will begin in 2027, followed by the assembly of 60 wind turbines in 2028. This staggered timeline allows RWE to manage CAPEX, logistical resources, and weather windows more efficiently, increasing the likelihood of meeting deadlines.

Strategic Alliance and RWE’s Global Leadership

Nordseecluster is a joint project between RWE, which holds 51%, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which maintains 49%, with RWE responsible for construction and operation throughout the entire lifecycle of the wind farms.

With over 20 years of experience in offshore wind and a portfolio including projects such as Sofia in the United Kingdom (1.4 GW), Thor in Denmark (1.1 GW), and OranjeWind in the Netherlands (795 MW), the company reinforces its position as a leading global player in offshore wind energy.

Power Generation and Support for Industrial Decarbonization

Together, the two phases of Nordseecluster will generate approximately 6.5 terawatt-hours of green electricity per year, contributing significantly to Germany’s energy security and climate goals.

RWE will use this renewable production to offer customized energy solutions to industrial clients, including major technology companies such as Amazon, with whom the company has signed a power purchase agreement for 110 MW from Nordseecluster B.
