The company Phelan Green has successfully selected Honeywell’s processing systems for its electro-sustainable aviation fuel (eSAF) plant. This complex will be located in Saldanha Bay and will utilize cutting-edge technology to convert carbon dioxide into liquid fuels that meet the demands of the international aviation industry.
Advanced Systems for eSAF Fuel Production
The company will integrate Honeywell UOP‘s Fischer Tropsch Unicracking process to utilize liquids and waxes derived from captured emissions. This methodology offers a proven route for producing clean energy on a large scale.
The project is integrated into Phelan’s green hydrogen plan and is supported by the South African government due to its national strategic importance. Furthermore, a private investment of $2.5 billion ensures an infrastructure capable of competing in the most demanding markets.
Once the production center reaches full operational capacity, it will be able to supply over 140,000 tons of eco-friendly fuel annually. The primary destination for this production will be the markets of the European Union and the United Kingdom, regions with strict emission regulations. Construction will formally begin in the fourth quarter of 2026 and will generate thousands of local jobs during its various development phases.
This agreement ensures that Honeywell provides scalable and flexible solutions for the creation of low-carbon fuels. The implemented technology will help South Africa consolidate its position as a competitive global export hub.
The aviation sector relies on these types of innovations to achieve an effective transition towards operational sustainability. With this alliance, Phelan Green enhances its two-decade trajectory in the development of renewable energies and deep industrial decarbonization projects.
