The companies Moeve and thyssenkrupp nucera have formalized a far-reaching agreement to boost the production of sustainable energy carriers in Huelva. The contract establishes the supply of alkaline water electrolysis equipment with a capacity of 300 megawatts (MW), intended for the initial phase of the ambitious Onuba project.

The Technology for the Onuba Project

This collaboration involves the delivery of 15 standardized 20 MW units. The implementation of this technology at the La Rábida Energy Park will enable an estimated production of 45,000 tons per year of green hydrogen. Likewise, the operation of these facilities will prevent the emission of approximately 250,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year. Moeve’s expertise in managing large-scale projects combines with the German firm’s technical precision to strengthen the local energy infrastructure.

From my perspective, the strategic location in southern Spain is decisive due to the abundance of wind and solar resources. The Onuba project constitutes the first link in a scalable value chain that will connect the energy supply from the south with industrial demand in northern Europe. Werner Ponikwar, CEO of thyssenkrupp nucera, maintains that current conditions allow large-scale investments to advance firmly in volatile markets.

The integration of these systems not only guarantees a clean energy source, but also strengthens industrial resilience against dependence on external fossil fuels. Maarten Wetselaar, CEO of Moeve, emphasizes that this technological partnership is fundamental to supplying renewable fuels efficiently. The development of maritime and land transport corridors will enable the hydrogen produced in Huelva to lead the transformation of the global energy sector.
