Chevron confirmed the oil discovery at the Bandit prospect, located in Green Canyon Block 680 in the Gulf of Mexico. The announcement follows the initial communication from the operator Occidental, which is responsible for the project.

The exploratory well, drilled approximately 200 kilometers south of the Louisiana coast, encountered Miocene sands with high-quality crude oil. This type of geological formation is significant due to its capacity to store hydrocarbons in commercial volumes with favorable extraction conditions.

Oil at Bandit: technical evaluation and next steps

Currently, the project partners are analyzing the results obtained to define the development plan. The discovery presents potential to be tied back via subsea infrastructure to nearby facilities operated by Occidental, which could accelerate its commencement of production.

Furthermore, this possibility of integration with existing assets reduces costs and improves the project’s competitiveness within the offshore portfolios of the companies involved.

Company participation in Bandit

The Bandit field is operated by Occidental, which holds a 45.375% interest. Chevron, through Chevron USA Inc., controls 37.125%, while Woodside Energy holds the remaining 17.5%.

This structure reflects a strategic collaboration between key energy sector players in deepwater projects.

Chevron’s exploration strategy

Chevron highlights that the discovery is part of a strategy focused on high-impact opportunities, both in emerging zones and in areas with established infrastructure.

Kevin McLachlan, the company’s Vice President of Exploration, noted that the project demonstrates the value of a balanced and disciplined portfolio. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of leveraging existing facilities to optimize future production.

The Gulf of Mexico as an energy hub

The Gulf of Mexico continues to position itself as a key region for energy supply, especially in technically complex offshore projects.

Chevron, one of the leading producers in the area, maintains an extensive portfolio of operated and non-operated assets. Discoveries like Bandit reinforce its expertise in deepwater exploration and consolidate its presence in this strategic environment.
