Aker BP has started oil production at the Symra field, located in the North Sea, bringing the schedule forward and strengthening its offshore asset portfolio in Norway.
The project began operations nine months ahead of plan, enabling earlier revenue and accelerating development of the Eiga area. The field is estimated to contribute around 63 million barrels of oil equivalent.
Likewise, Symra is positioned as the sixth Aker BP-operated development approved in 2022 to enter the production phase, reinforcing the company’s execution pace on the Norwegian continental shelf.
About the Symra field
The field is located about 7 kilometers northeast of the Ivar Aasen platform and has been developed as a subsea tie-back. Production is initially processed on this platform before final treatment at Edvard Grieg.
The development includes four wells connected via a subsea structure, enabling optimization of existing infrastructure and reducing operating costs.
In addition, key modifications were made to both platforms to integrate the new subsea infrastructure and increase the system’s processing capacity.
Regarding execution, the project involved multiple specialized suppliers. TechnipFMC supplied the subsea systems, while Moreld Apply and Aibel carried out modifications on the Edvard Grieg and Ivar Aasen platforms, respectively.
Drilling operations were carried out by Odfjell Drilling and Halliburton through Aker BP’s drilling alliance, ensuring safety and efficiency standards across all phases.
A new type of field on the Norwegian shelf
According to Karl Johnny Hersvik, CEO of Aker BP, the project reflects the ability to collaborate among partners and suppliers to achieve fast and safe deliveries.
The executive noted that Symra opens the door to a new zone within the Eiga area and represents a different type of field on the Norwegian shelf, creating value for both partners and society.
Aker BP operates the project together with Equinor, with a 30% stake, and DNO Norge, with 20%, consolidating a strategic alliance in offshore development in the North Sea.
