In a scenario marked by the climate urgency, energy efficiency is gaining prominence in Latin America. The International Energy Agency (IEA) and the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER) are organizing a week of specialized training in Mexico City in April 2026, aimed at public policy makers.

Since its creation in 2015, this program has trained thousands of professionals in more than 130 countries, establishing itself as an important platform for strengthening technical capacities in emerging economies.

Objectives of energy efficiency training

Furthermore, the meeting seeks to provide participants with practical tools to design and implement policies that improve energy use. The focus is on accelerating the energy transition and advancing toward global emission reduction goals.

In addition, the exchange of experiences between countries is promoted, facilitating the adoption of strategies that have already demonstrated results in other contexts.

Key areas: buildings, industry, and transport

On the other hand, the program is structured into five fundamental areas that address different strategic sectors.

In buildings, solutions to reduce energy consumption and move toward net-zero emissions are analyzed. In industry, mechanisms to improve competitiveness through more efficient energy use are studied.

Meanwhile, in transport, the focus is on electrification and policies that reduce energy consumption in mobility.

Appliances and equipment

In this field, participants learn to design regulations and incentives that raise efficiency standards in everyday products.

Indicators and evaluation

At the same time, the program delves into the use of data to measure progress, evaluate policies, and improve decision-making in energy efficiency.

Impact on public policies and energy transition

Similarly, this initiative reinforces the capacity of governments to implement more effective policies. Energy efficiency is positioned as a pillar within the energy transition, by allowing for the reduction of emissions and costs without compromising economic growth.

It is also expected that the knowledge acquired will drive stronger regulatory frameworks in the region.

Participation and attendee profile

Regarding attendees, the program is primarily aimed at energy policy makers, although it also includes profiles from industry, academia, and specialized organizations.

It should be noted that the event promotes greater female participation in the energy sector, seeking to balance representation in a field traditionally dominated by men.

Agenda and program development in Mexico

Finally, the training week will take place from April 13 to 17, 2026, as part of the collaboration with the International Energy Agency (IEA). It will begin with a high-level plenary session and continue with specialized workshops and collaborative activities.

The closing will focus on the practical application of the knowledge acquired and the strengthening of professional networks in Latin America.

Argentina reinforces gas exports with technology

Baker Hughes was selected to supply key equipment for a pipeline project in Argentina focused on liquefied natural gas exports. The contract includes gas turbines and compressors to be installed in Río Negro to transport gas from Vaca Muerta to the coast, where it will be processed and shipped to international markets.

The project marks the first time this turbine technology has been used in South America, highlighting its efficiency and low emissions. In addition to the equipment supply, the agreement includes monitoring services and technical support. This infrastructure will be essential for supplying LNG vessels and strengthening the gas value chain in the country.

Gabon extends oil production until 2053

BW Energy secured a 25-year extension for the Dussafu Marin field license off the coast of Gabon, extending its validity until 2053. This agreement with the government ensures continuity in one of its main assets and allows for the ongoing development of projects within the block.

The extension supports ongoing initiatives such as the MaBoMo phase and the future development of Bourdon, in addition to opening new opportunities in nearby areas operated by the company. With this foundation, BW Energy gains greater stability to plan investments and increase its production in the coming years.

Italy strengthens biorefinery with European support

The European Investment Bank and Eni signed a 500 million euro agreement to transform part of the Sannazzaro refinery in Italy into a biorefinery. The project includes the adaptation of existing facilities to process waste such as used oils and agro-industrial waste with the aim of producing cleaner biofuels.

The plant will use specialized technology to generate renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel, with an estimated capacity of 550,000 tons per year starting in 2028. This initiative leverages already installed infrastructure, which allows for accelerated development and expanded energy production with lower environmental impact.

Nuclear energy advances in Texas with new project

Fluor signed a contract with X-energy to advance the development of a nuclear project in Texas that seeks to install four small modular reactors. These systems will be intended to supply electricity and industrial steam to a Dow plant, replacing old energy infrastructure with a carbon-free option.

The agreement includes an initial phase focused on the planning and feasibility of the project, including cost control and risk assessment. The initiative has support from the United States government and is part of a program that seeks to accelerate the use of advanced nuclear technologies. If completed, it would be one of the first projects of its kind at an industrial scale in North America.
