A new 100% electric ferry incorporating cutting-edge energy storage technology is currently under construction and will be the first of its kind to operate in South America . The energy storage system, provided by Corvus Energy, will have a capacity in excess of 40 MW/h and will be used to power a series of electric motors that drive a water jet propulsion system.

The Finnish company Wärtsilä will be responsible for the integration of the electrical system on the vessel and will be part of the fleet of Bus, which will operate between Argentina and Uruguay, marking a milestone by being the first to offer services on the longest and highest speed route without generating emissions.

In addition, this will be the first in the world to have the highest capacity chargers available, which will highlight it as a pioneer in the incorporation of charging systems of this magnitude in the electric ferry industry globally.

The technology implemented in this vessel will position it as one of the most advanced in the world in terms of completely emission-free propulsion and energy storage systems.

This set of batteries supplies power to a series of electric motors that drive the water jet-based propulsion system. Incat is currently working on building a second cruise ship of this type that will use batteries and is rumored to be somewhat smaller than this one, although equally impressive in terms of technology.

A ferry with cutting-edge technology

Its manufacturing combines cutting-edge technology, a commitment to environmental sustainability and innovative design. It will have the capacity to carry 2,100 passengers and crew members, as well as 225 cars and will offer a duty-free shop covering more than 2,000 m 2 . It is planned to enter service in 2025, while the battery system will be delivered at the end of 2024.

“The construction of the Buquebus ship is leading the world in terms of propulsion and zero-emission energy storage. Once operational, its ground-based cargo systems will be the most advanced and capable in the world. Its high-speed capabilities , long range and zero emissions are testament to its cutting-edge technology,” says Craig Clifford, General Director of Incat.

The overall outstanding efficiency of this new generation of electric ferries represents an innovative advance in the design of this means of transportation. Roger Holm, the President of Wärtsilä’s Marine Power division, expressed the company’s satisfaction at having applied its vast technical expertise in the integration of its ship electrification and propulsion system solutions.

The battery pack to be supplied will set a record as the largest capacity ever supplied and is characterized by a unique configuration employing eight water jet thrusters. This water jet propulsion arrangement with eight electric motors stands out as the most efficient currently available for speeds and applications of this type.

It should be noted that this company has already developed a combustion engine that works with a hydrogen mixture, which makes it an important figure in the sector.
