The ENGIE Chile project called “BESS Coya” located in the Antofagasta region, has completed civil works and has reached 70% progress. This represents the largest storage system in Latin America .
BESS Coya: the largest storage system in Latin America
In December 2022, ENGIE Chile announced the construction of the largest storage system in Latin America based on the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), known as “BESS Coya”. Since then, this project has advanced significantly and has now completed the construction phase, achieving 70% progress.
“BESS Coya” will have a storage capacity of 638 MWh, which will allow it to supply energy for 5 hours , equivalent to a delivery of 200 GWh on average per year. This system will store the energy generated by the Coya Solar Plant, which has a capacity of 181.25 MWac and is also owned by ENGIE Chile.
Rosaline Corinthien, CEO of ENGIE Chile, expressed: “We are very proud to continue moving forward to accelerate the energy transition . We are currently building two storage system projects in Chile, BESS Coya and BESS Tamaya.”
“Once both come into operation, our storage capacity in Chile will exceed 1GWh per day. We believe that this type of technology is key to the decarbonization of the energy matrix, since it increases flexibility and provides greater security of supply.”
Details on the progress of BESS Coya were revealed during the official opening ceremony of the Coya Solar Plant, which is the largest capacity renewable energy park operated by ENGIE in Chile. This plant came into commercial operation in April this year.
This ceremony took place at the operation site located in the commune of María Elena, in the Antofagasta region. It was chaired by Rosaline Corinthien, CEO of ENGIE Chile and had the participation of Dafne Pino, the Energy Minister of the Antofagasta region, and Rodrigo Mardones, who is the head of the Social Department of the Provincial Delegation of Tocopilla.
“Today we celebrate a momentous milestone that highlights ENGIE Chile’s commitment to the energy transition. The inauguration of this renewable energy plant and the construction of the innovative energy storage system are concrete evidence of the dedication to a more sustainable future. We are proud that the Antofagasta region continues to lead the energy transition of our country,” said Pino.
During the event, tribute was paid to the company’s employees who played a fundamental role in the creation and implementation of the Coya Solar Plant. As a token of gratitude for their contribution to advancing Chile’s energy transition, they were given recognition in the form of a galvano.
