Equinor committed to energy efficiency

In a bold move that marks a milestone in the energy industry, Equinor has announced plans to replace two of its gas turbines on the Statfjord C platform, located in the North Sea. The reason behind this change? Drastically reduce CO 2 emissions , with a projected decrease of up to 95,000 tons per year.

The innovation does not stop there. The company, in collaboration with Equinor Energy AS and other partners, has decided to invest in heat recovery to produce electricity. This strategy is not only a novelty in mature fields in production, but also represents a qualitative leap towards energy efficiency . In fact, this new steam turbine, which will start operating in 2026, is expected to take advantage of the excess heat from the gas compressors to generate electricity, thus reducing 25% of the platform’s total annual CO 2 emissions .

Ketil Rongved, Equinor’s Vice President for Field Life Extension (FLX) projects, enthused: “We are witnessing the birth of a new era in energy production. The introduction of these lightweight solutions in mature fields is a testament to of our commitment to the environment and innovation”.

Additionally, Equinor is no stranger to green initiatives. Since 2021, a heat recovery unit at Statfjord B has been reducing CO2 emissions by 20,000 tonnes every year. And with the electrification of water injection and other measures at Statfjord C, the company reaffirms its position as a leader in the transition to a cleaner and more sustainable energy industry.

This is certainly an exciting time for the energy sector and a reminder that with innovation and determination, a greener future is within reach. Stay tuned for more revolutionary advances in the energy sector!
