Tighter export controls!

USA last Monday strengthened the export controls to China of materials and components for nuclear power plants, in order to ensure that the items are used only for peaceful purposes and not for the proliferation of weapons, according to a document published by the Office of Industry and Security, an agency that belongs to the Department of Commerce of the North American country.

From now on, US exporters will be required to have a specific license to send certain generators, containers and ‘software’ to the Asian country for nuclear power plants .

At the same time, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission. (NRC) announced that from now on, a specific license will also be required to export both basic and special nuclear material.

This includes different types of uranium, as well as deuterium, an isotope of hydrogen that, in large quantities, can be used in reactors to make tritium, a component of nuclear weapons.

Likewise, from that state agency they argue that the Biden Administration considers the measure “necessary to promote the national security interests” of the North American country and “improve common defense and security.”

“No action by an exporter or by China prompted this action. This is part of a broader effort by the US government to strengthen oversight of certain exports to China,” an NRC spokesperson explained.

Liu Pengyu, spokesman for the Embassy of the Asian country in the North American country, said he had nothing to comment on these measures, although he assured that Beijing “firmly upholds the international non-proliferation regime” and complies with its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Nuclear proliferation.
