The tests of its autonomous operation have already begun!

WonderJourney (MJ-1A) is an Artificial Intelligence (AI) satellite that has been developed in China and recently launched into space, state media outlet South China Morning Post reports.

The creators of Star Vision, the company behind the development, claim that the satellite will have the ability to process data at its location without relying on control signals from Earth .

“The goal is to allow human interaction with spacecraft, allowing the satellite to autonomously warn of situations that cannot be analyzed from the Earth’s surface and continue learning without sending large amounts of data back to Earth.” explains Chen Junrui, one of those involved in the satellite.

Satellite tasks with artificial intelligence

Among its main functions is the performance of system tests and confirmation of the effectiveness of various smart innovations such as interconnection with vehicles and smart drones, in addition to monitoring environmental conditions for fire control, soil moisture and pest detection.

The AI is the “brain of the satellite,” according to Junrui, and “enables real-time observation and processing.” According to his account, “the data must be sent back to a control center on the ground for analysis and instructions”, but with WonderJourney it is different.

Along with its artificial intelligence technology, the satellite is equipped with high-resolution cameras, near-infrared cameras, and virtual reality panoramic cameras . Junrui points out that these tools allow the satellite to perform various image processing tasks, such as reconnaissance of forests and oceans, target identification, and accurate interpretation and cleaning of data.

The launch of the MJ-1A took place on August 11, in the company of six other satellites aboard the Chinese CERES-1 Y7 rocket, from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northern China. Among the satellites launched are Xiguang-1 01, intended to observe the Earth to collect data on natural resources, agriculture, forestry and disaster mitigation; as well as Starpool I-1B, focused on remote sensing and inter-satellite and satellite-ground communication.

The developers hope that more satellites with artificial intelligence capabilities will be added to the first WonderJourney launched. Junrui told the South China Morning Post that they plan to expand their constellation to 20 satellites by the end of 2024 .
