India is emerging as a global force and one of the fastest growing economies in the world, beginning to compete with China. However, the constant concern about foreign energy dependence has led the government to address this issue through projects such as the one that involves the purchase of more than 10,000 electric buses .
India wants to invest in electric buses
This initiative, known as PM-eBus Sewa, part of the office of the Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi and contemplates a total budget of more than 6,300 million euros for the acquisition of this fleet, the installation of the charging systems and their maintenance for the next 10 years.
The project aims to partially or completely convert the diesel bus fleets of all cities with a population of more than 3 million inhabitants according to the 2011 census. This includes not only the capitals of the union territories, but also cities in the northeast region and those located in mountainous areas. In this program, priority will be given to cities that lack an organized public transportation system.
Given the size of the country, it is a considerable number of cities, estimated to reach at least 169. This project is also expected to generate a significant number of direct jobs, in the range of between 45,000 and 55,000 positions.
Thanks to this ambitious project, several cities in India will start to implement public transport systems based on electric buses. In other areas, meanwhile, outdated diesel buses that emit pollution and noise will be replaced by clean, quiet models that also have lower operating costs.
This initiative, as indicated by the government, will also favor economies of scale in the acquisition of these buses, paving the way for future purchases at more competitive prices.
