Restrictions on the transit of ships continue
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) has announced that Reserve Condition 3 for the Panamax Locks will remain in effect until Saturday, September 2, 2023 . This implies an extension of the restrictions for the transit of vessels through the canal, maintaining the maximum limit of 32 authorized daily transits . Likewise, the suspension of the extraordinary reserves in the Panamax and Neopanamax locks will also be extended until the mentioned date.
These waterway restriction measures, implemented due to the delay in the rainy season in Panama this year, could put additional pressure on the prices of consumer products. According to companies and industry analysts, delays and additional charges will contribute to increasing the costs of maritime freight transport.
According to a Reuters report, as of August 16, a total of 131 vessels, some with reservations and some without, were registered waiting in line to pass through the Panama Canal . This figure represents a decrease compared to the 161 ships reported a week earlier, according to official data.
Additionally, the ACP has reported that from 04:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 22, 2023 to 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 1, 2023 (for 11 days), the chamber on the side wall in the west lane of the Gatun Locks will not be operational due to maintenance tasks. Although the west lane will continue to be available, this disruption will result in extended transit times in the area.
