China unveiled its first electric container ship . Named as 700 TEU, this electric ship is already sailing on the Yangtze River. The number 700 refers to its load capacity, which is equivalent to 700 6-meter containers.
More details of the new electric container ship
As for its autonomy, the designers have addressed this issue intelligently so as not to interrupt its 965-kilometre route. They have incorporated interchangeable batteries into the electric ship, which can be replaced during its journey. These batteries , with a capacity of 50,000 kWh, occupy 36 of the 700 containers that the ship transports.
The ship has a length of 120 meters, a width of approximately 24 meters and a weight of 10,000 tons. It is powered by two 900 kW motors and has been manufactured for COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry as part of a broader approach to employ electric propulsion ships throughout the Yangtze River region.
This newly launched ship joins the electric cruise ship known as the “Yangtze River Three Gorges 1”, the world’s largest electric cruise ship that was unveiled last year. China hopes that the Yangtze River will be the site of many significant projects for the country’s green development.
The 700 TEU vessel is the first of two electric container ships under construction. Both will be operated by Shanghai Pan Asia Shipping, a COSCO subsidiary, on the river route between Shanghai and Wuhan.
