South Africa’s state-owned transport and logistics company has taken a significant step in the construction of a new port for the export of basic products, including hydrogen derivatives. The Transnet National Ports Authority has selected three consortia, who will be asked to submit proposals to design, finance and build the Boegoebaai port, located on the north-west coast of South Africa, as well as the associated rail infrastructure. This decision was announced by the company in a statement issued last week.
The construction of the hydrogen port
Among the eight consortia of local and foreign companies that applied, three groups have been selected by the South African National Ports Authority (TNPA). These groups are the Boegoebaai Port & Rail Consortium, the Boegoebaai Development Consortium, and the Project Elephant Consort . The TNPA has not provided details about the participants in each group.
South Africa’s goal is to take advantage of the generous availability of wind and sun on its west coast to produce the renewable energy needed for the creation of green hydrogen . This type of hydrogen is used to make exportable products, such as green ammonia. The construction of the Boegoebaai port would also allow the export of manganese.
