Chinese energy company Three Gorges has set new industry records by installing the world’s largest wind turbine , created using state-of-the-art offshore wind turbines. Without a doubt, this achievement has considerably raised the bar for the future in the field of wind energy in this Asian country.
The world’s largest wind turbine is in China
China has developed a new offshore wind turbine with an impressive 252-meter-wide rotor, a significant improvement on the previous record held by a 236-meter-diameter rotor turbine from Danish company Vestas.
This extraordinary power generating unit is expected to produce 63.5 million kWh of electricity per year , equivalent to the consumption of 30,000 households in China. This record-setting 16 MW wind turbine is being installed on the country’s southeast coast. It forms part of the second phase of CTG’s Zhangpu Liuao wind farm, and is the largest of its kind in the world. The installation was made possible by the company’s wind power platform, known as Baihetan.
China’s commitment to renewable energy
The Zhangpu Liuao Wind Farm has reached a significant milestone by installing the world’s first 16 MW wind turbine. This engineering marvel has been developed collaboratively by CTG and Goldwind Technology and features an impressive 252 meter diameter rotor , equivalent to the area of seven standard football fields. The turbine hub rises to 146 meters , comparable to a 50-story building.
With this impressive power generating unit, it is expected to produce a considerable amount of renewable energy , which will significantly contribute to the country’s efforts to achieve its sustainability goals. Let’s remember that China is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the world and its coal-fired power plants are primarily responsible for its pollution.
This heavy reliance on coal has caused severe air pollution in many Chinese cities, leading to chronic health problems among its inhabitants, especially those suffering from respiratory diseases.
Additionally, due to rapid industrialization in China, alarming levels of water pollution have occurred, which has had serious repercussions on local ecosystems, agriculture, and people’s health.
To address these issues, the country has made significant investments in clean energy technologies and has made a commitment to reduce carbon emissions , thus seeking to mitigate the effects of climate change.
More about Zhangpu Liuao Park
Each of the wind turbines of the Zhangpu Liuao Phase 2 offshore wind farm, with a capacity of 400 MW, can generate 34.2 kWh of electricity per revolution. This equates to more than 66 GWh of clean electricity generated annually by a single wind turbine.
Taken together, the entire park, with a total capacity of 400 MW, has the capacity to produce 1.6 TWh of electricity, which can result in savings of approximately 500,000 tons of coal and a reduction in emissions of 1.36 million tons per year.
This impressive investment in the production of clean energy will have a positive impact on the environment, which will contribute to mitigating the polluting effects that arise from activities in this Asian country.
