Alfa Laval has expanded its range of alternative fuel solutions by adding Aalborg methanol-fired steam boilers to its offering. These will be installed on newly built container ships for the first time and additional deliveries for cruise ships and carrier vessels are already being planned.
Regardless of the type of fuel used, Alfa Laval’s Aalborg boilers offer significant savings thanks to their high thermal efficiency and intelligent Turbo Clean (TCi) technology. The methanol boilers will be used for the first time on newly built container ships and new deliveries for cruise ships and transport ships are already in preparation.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin at the end of 2023.

These Aalborg boilers have been designed with the aim of reducing emissions and facilitating the energy transition . Another positive aspect is that they are compatible with a wide range of fuels, including low sulfur, biofuels, LNG, methanol, among others. Alfa Laval’s “ready boiler” concept offers a future-proof platform, allowing the burner and boiler pressure section to be easily adjusted as required.
In early 2021, the company began rigorous operational tests of the methanol boilers at its Test and Training Center in Aalborg, Denmark. In November of that same year, Alfa Laval obtained the first maritime approval from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for the use of methanol boilers and in less than two years achieved the installation of methanol boilers in some of the main shipowners. , driving the adoption of alternative fuel boilers throughout the maritime industry.
