Seeing a flying car was only possible through fictional futuristic movies. However, every time a company presents a new prototype, that future feels closer and closer.

During the Tech Day event held a few weeks ago, Chinese state-owned auto company Guangzhou Automobile Group (GAC) unveiled its innovative vehicle, the GAC GOVE . This design combines the characteristics of the classic VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) with a conventional electric car .

GAC GOVE: the flying car

The GOVE is a modular design made up of two vehicles that can operate together or separately, offering an intelligent mobility solution for both land travel and airborne flights and air-ground couplings. This concept is designed to be used on short-haul flights, such as airport transfers or urban commutes.

It is composed of a spacious and comfortable flight deck designed for a single passenger. It has six masts at the top, where the rotors are located, similar to those of a helicopter. In addition, it incorporates a four-wheel autonomous mobile chassis that has a luxurious and futuristic appearance, powered by ADiGO PILOT.

When the cabin and base are separated, the latter has the ability to move autonomously towards a charging station or other user-defined destination. The company’s idea is that the base is for shared use, while the cabin is for personal use.

This innovative design uses 90% lightweight composite materials and is equipped with a 3DoF flight control system and aerospace high-precision docking technology. In order to ensure safety, the company has applied the MBSE systems engineering concept, used in the aerospace field.

The company has not yet disclosed information about the price, speed or range of the vehicle . However, they have completed the initial design phase and are currently in the development stage. Its objective is to obtain all the necessary authorizations to put it into production in the coming years.

Wu Jian, Chairman of the GAC Research Institute, explained that they are collaborating with aerospace research institutes to establish a flight technology cooperation ecosystem and create a safe and reliable air travel corridor.
