BP and Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) have confirmed the successful start-up of the MJ gas and condensate project on the east coast of India. MJ is the third major deepwater development carried out by the RIL-BP partnership in the KG D6 block.
After completing extensive testing and commissioning activities, the MJ field has begun gas and condensate production. This achievement builds on the successful start of production of the R-Cluster field in December 2020 and the Satellite Cluster in April 2021. All three developments take advantage of the existing core infrastructure in the KG D6 block.
BP and Reliance: a win-win partnership for India
“By bringing these new developments online safely, RIL and BP are making an important contribution to meeting the demand for safe gas supplies in India,” said BP CEO Bernard Looney. “Our close strategic partnership with RIL spans over 15 years and we are proud of how it continues to go from strength to strength – in gas, retail, aviation fuels and sustainable mobility solutions. Together, we are helping to meet India’s growing energy needs, contributing the best of each partner to create real value”.
Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and CEO of Reliance Industries Limited, said: “We continue to be proud of our partnership with BP, which combines our experience in launching complex projects in some of the most challenging environments in recent years. Along with the other fields in KG D6 block, MJ’s development truly supports the ‘Make in India’ initiative and energy vision set by the Government of India.”
With the MJ field reaching its peak production, the combined production of the three fields is expected to reach around 30 million standard cubic meters of gas per day (billion cubic feet per day). This significant production capacity is estimated to meet approximately one third of India’s current domestic gas demand, contributing to the country’s energy security. Furthermore, it is expected to cover approximately 15% of India’s overall gas requirements.
The MJ field, discovered in 2013 and approved in 2019, is located in marine waters up to 1,200 meters deep, about 30 kilometers from the existing land terminal at Gadimoga. MJ is a high pressure, high temperature (HPHT) gas and condensate field to be developed from eight wells. Maximum gas production is estimated to be approximately 12 million standard cubic meters per day, along with 25,000 barrels of condensate per day.
To facilitate field development, a new floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel called “Ruby” will be used. The FPSO will play a crucial role in the processing and separation of condensate, gas, water and impurities, ensuring efficient delivery of gas to shore for sale. The condensate will be stored in the FPSO before being unloaded into tankers for supply to refineries in India . Regarding the participations, RIL, as the operator of the KG D6 block, owns 66.67%, while BP owns the remaining 33.33%.
