The green hydrogen project of the company Iberdrola, which has a capacity of 200 MW of electrolyser, will be promoted by the Project Accelerator Unit (UAP) of the Junta de Andalucía. This initiative will involve an investment of 450 million euros and the creation of more than a thousand jobs.

According to the company, the plant will have a production capacity of 23,000 tons of hydrogen per year by 2026 and aims to develop a value chain completely free of CO 2 emissions.

This green hydrogen plant will be located in the industrial area of Huelva, specifically in Palos de la Frontera, and will become the largest hub for the production, transformation, and consumption of green hydrogen in Spain. The main purpose of this project is to decarbonise industry and heavy transport.

In connection with this initiative, Iberdrola will also build the first green ammonia plant in Europe , which will make it possible to export renewable energy from the south of the continent in the form of green derivatives through the Green Hydrogen Maritime Corridor established between Spain and the Netherlands.

Green hydrogen and other projects

Iberdrola has established agreements with Trammo, one of the world’s leading ammonia marketers, and ACE Terminal for the sale and distribution of green ammonia to end customers. A terminal dedicated to the reception, storage and distribution of green ammonia will be built in the Port of Rotterdam.

In addition to the hydrogen project, the Iberdrola Project Accelerator Unit initiative also contemplates the development of 1,000 MW of photovoltaic plants in the province of Huelva by Iberdrola Renovables.

It is important to remember that the Project Accelerator Unit (UAP) has been created by the Government of the Junta de Andalucía to expedite strategic projects.

Currently, the Iberdrola company already has a 420 MW photovoltaic plant in the province that has the corresponding administrative authorization. This expansion in renewable energy will mean an additional investment of 700 million euros.
