Colombia has gas reserves for eight years if it were to suspend exploration and production. This is confirmed by Vanti, the natural gas distributor in the country. Likewise, the Ministry of Mines and Energy affirmed that Casanare, La Guajira and Córdoba are the departments with the largest reserves of said fuel in the national territory.
According to the executives, if Ecopetrol were to suspend exploration work at this time and stop production, Colombia would have reserves for more than eight years.
The main reserves are located in the departments of Casanare, which ranks first with 49% (1.38 Tpc), followed by La Guajira 20% (0.56 Tpc) and Córdoba 9% (0.25 Tpc).
During the year 2022, gas production was exceeded by 753 thousand barrels per day on average compared to the year 2021. Similarly, so far in 2023 that figure has also been exceeded with 773 thousand barrels per day.
Vanti’s manager said that contracts have currently been signed in the country to maintain exploration.

Colombia will continue with the exploration of gas and liquid fuels, although there will be a gradual transition. The Government announced the points with which they will carry out a fair and sustainable energy transition and formulated four fundamental axes through which it will gradually advance in the process:
- Greater investments in clean energy and decarbonization.
- Progressive substitution of the demand for fossil fuels .
- Review and eventual relaxation of the regulation to accelerate the generation of clean energy.
- Reindustrialization of the Colombian economy.
The times of the energy transition will depend on the results of these axes.
The Government of Colombia stressed that with these axes they will be able to know the balances of exploration contracts in the country, as well as their effects on the production and export of oil and gas production.
