French company TotalEnergies and Aramco, the world’s largest oil company, have signed $11 billion worth of contracts to build a petrochemical complex linked to a refinery that both companies operate in Saudi Arabia.
According to Aramco’s statement, the award of the engineering, procurement and construction contracts for the main process units and related services marks the start of construction of the joint expansion of the petrochemical complex , after the final investment decision announced in December 2022.
It is a global petrochemical facility called Amiral, which will be established at the Satorp refinery, located in the port of Jubail, on the eastern coast of Saudi Arabia and in which both companies are shareholders.
According to the statement, the purpose of this complex is to house one of the largest mixed-load steam crackers in the Persian Gulf, with a production capacity of approximately 1,650 kilotons of ethylene and other industrial gases per year.

Both companies expect that this expansion will generate additional investments of more than 4,000 million dollars in various industrial sectors. These sectors include carbon fibers, lubricants, drilling fluids, detergents, food additives, auto parts and tires, according to the Efe news agency.
In addition, this project is expected to generate approximately 7,000 local jobs, both direct and indirect. During a ceremony in the city of Dahran, Aramco CEO Amin Naser stressed that this expansion of SATORP represents an important step forward to further strengthen the partnership between the two companies that have collaborated closely for nearly five decades.
For his part, the president and CEO of TotalEnergies, Patrick Pouyanné, highlighted during the ceremony that this world-class project marks the beginning of a new stage in the shared history between both companies.
