Portugal is the largest producer of lithium in Europe, but its miners sell almost exclusively to the ceramic industry.

Mining company Savannah Resources said Portuguese authorities had approved its environmental impact assessment for what could become the largest lithium mine in Western Europe, calling the move an “important milestone” for the project.

London-based Savannah received preliminary approval for its Barroso open pit mine from the Portuguese environmental regulator APA (Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente) in 2021, but had to make changes required by the authority and resubmitted it early of this year.

In a statement, the APA said it had granted the company a “favorable” EIS (Environmental Impact Statement), but there were a wide range of measures Savannah had to comply with, such as limiting vegetation removal from the project area. , do not take water from a nearby river and carry out landscaping work once the extraction is finished.
