Siemens Gamesa has unveiled this week a steel turbine tower developed using a “greener” steelmaking process that reduces carbon emissions by almost two-thirds compared to the normal procedure.

The “greener tower” or “GreenerTower” is made up of steel plates manufactured by the German company Salzgitter AG , which, according to Siemens Gamesa, reduces carbon emissions by at least 63% compared to conventional steel.

According to Siemens, the new tower will be available for both onshore and offshore turbines in projects to be installed from 2024, and an agreement has already been closed for the supply of the first “GreenerTowers” to a wind farm. The company has partnered with renewable energy company RWE Renewables to supply 36 of them to the 1 GW Thor offshore wind project currently planned in the Danish North Sea.

72 Siemens Gamesa turbines will be installed

The project will consist of 72 Siemens Gamesa 14-236 DD turbines, upon completion, according to Windpower Intelligence, the data and research arm of Windpower Monthly. The installation of the turbines is scheduled for 2026.

Siemens Gamesa stated that one ton of steel produces an average of 1.91 tons of CO emissions2 during its manufacture, but is setting a threshold of 0.7 tons of CO equivalent emissions2 per ton of steel to reduce emissions in the supply chain for turbine manufacturing.
