The ports of New York and New Jersey have surpassed Los Angeles in five of the last eight months, and are the busiest terminal in the country in the last period. It is worth mentioning that, traditionally, it has been located below Los Angeles and Long Beach.
The Port of Los Angeles continues to post declines in monthly volumes in 2023, after narrowly holding onto its title as the busiest shipping terminal in the US. last year, Alphaliner reported.
Despite decreased congestion and better December numbers, there has been no sustained recovery in Los Angeles numbers this year. In fact, volumes in January fell 16% year-on-year, while in February the drop was even greater, with 487,846 TEUs, which represents a significant decrease of 43% compared to the previous year.
Volumes at the major US container ports – NY/NJ, LA/LB and Savannah – are now well above 2019 levels (by 21%, 6%, 16% and 28%, respectively), although this may moderate as more services withdraw from the transpacific.
