The British Government is studying the feasibility and benefits of the Xlinks Morocco-UK Power project to understand how it could contribute to the UK’s energy security, as announced in a recent policy document.

The Morocco-UK Power Project is a multi-technology renewable energy project with a generating capacity of approximately 10.5 GW to be built in Morocco and supplied exclusively to the Great Britain grid via high-voltage direct current submarine cables. .

The document Powering Up Britain – Energy Security Plan outlines the British Government’s project for the future of energy in the United Kingdom, explaining how energy production will be diversified by investing in renewable energy to guarantee the energy, climate, economic and consumer security of the country.

In addition, the document outlines how the UK needs and benefits from importing energy, now and in the future, ensuring energy supplies from diversified sources of supply and relationships with strong and trusted partners and allies, such as Morocco.

“The UK’s energy security is a vital national interest. However, so is the urgent need to meet the Government’s 2035 target of a net-zero electricity system and avoid short-term ideas that could derail the transition towards clean and abundant sources of energy,” said Simon Morrish, CEO of Xlinks.

“Therefore, we welcome the Government’s determination to work with Xlinks to get our renewable energy business up and running. This first-of-its-kind Xlinks Morocco-UK Power project will cover up to 8% of the world’s electricity demand. UK with renewable energy, reducing consumer bills and contributing to security of supply.”

Situated in the renewable energy-rich Guelmim Oued Noun region of Morocco, the Morocco-UK Power project will combine solar and wind generation assets with energy storage, exclusively connected to the UK via 3,800 kilometer HVDC submarine cables with a capacity combined 3.6 GW at the receiving end.

The project, which is scheduled to come on stream by the end of the decade, will supply the UK with clean energy for an average of 20 hours a day, enough green energy to power more than seven million British homes by 2030.
