Lhyfe and Centrica have agreed to jointly develop offshore renewable green hydrogen in the UK, marking a first for the country. The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding that could accelerate green hydrogen as part of the energy transition in the UK.

Under the agreement, Lhyfe and Centrica will explore the possibility of combining their expertise to collaborate on a pilot site for green hydrogen production in the southern North Sea.

The aim of the pilot project will be to combine Lhyfe’s expertise in green hydrogen production, and Centrica’s in gas storage and infrastructure, to ensure that the hydrogen produced can be safely stored and used in the UK.

The end result will be proof that a comprehensive hydrogen production, storage and distribution system is possible in the country. The energy companies will also look into a further partnership to deploy the technology on a commercial scale alongside offshore wind electricity production.

“We are pleased to announce this agreement with Centrica, which represents an exciting opportunity to drive the clean energy transition through large-scale offshore green hydrogen production,” said Colin Brown, Lhyfe Country Manager UK & Ireland.

“Offshore electrolysis, coupled with hydrogen storage, will maximize the huge potential of UK offshore wind, (which) can become a world leader in the production of renewable green hydrogen, moving away from our reliance on fossil fuels and improving our domestic energy security, while providing net zero emissions and boosting local economies.”

For his part, Martin Scargill, CEO of Centrica Storage, said: “Hydrogen is going to play a key role in decarbonising the UK’s electricity supply by 2035 and our long-term ambition is that Rough, our gas, is the largest hydrogen store in the world, offering up to 16TWh of storage capacity”.

Hydrogen production is expected to initially support the decarbonization of industrial clusters.
