ExxonMobil Guyana Chairman Alistair Routledge said during a press conference in Georgetown that the company is “watching very closely the potential for gas development” off the coast of Guyana and that such developments would be important, given the abundant presence of volatile oils and condensates in uncovered wells.
“So we are currently doing a lot of technical work and providing updates to the Ministry of Natural Resources on what may be feasible,” Alistair explained.
The company is considering options for the development of gas that could be used for export or use in the country for projects, in addition to Gas-to-Energy.
The Gas-to-Energy project will use associated gas from the Liza field, mainly for domestic power generation.
During 2022, Exxon significantly increased Guyana’s gas reserves, with Westwood Group estimating that the Barreleye, Sailfin, Lau-Lau, Patwa, and Kiru Kiru wells held more gas than oil. The Haimara discovery near the border with Suriname is also filled with natural gas. Routledge claimed that more gas has been discovered further south-east in the Stabroek Block near the border.
