The Government of Argentina is advancing in the realization of various projects for the production and distribution of gas and oil from the Vaca Muerta field, located in the provinces of Neuquén, Río Negro, La Pampa and Mendoza, the second unconventional gas reservoir in the world.

Last week, the Minister of Economy, Sergio Massa, announced an investment agreement with the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF) for the construction of a gas pipeline that will connect the south with the north of the country. With an investment of 540 million dollars, the La Carlota – Tío Pujio project could increase export volumes to Chile and Brazil.

On the other hand, the Néstor Kirchner gas pipeline is entering its final stages of construction and it is estimated that, once it becomes operational, it will allow the nation to save billions of dollars in energy imports (fuels and liquefied gas) and pesos in subsidies to local users.

Although the extraction and transport of hydrocarbons from Vaca Muerta to the rest of the country continues to be difficult since its discovery in 2012, President Fernández believes that Argentina could in a short time export gas to Europe, a continent that lacks this resource.” for reasons of the war between Russia and Ukraine,” he said.

In this regard, the work of Yacimientos Petrolíferos Fiscales (YPF) is fundamental, the company that returned to the hands of the State in 2012, during the presidency of Cristina Fernández de Kirchner.

According to YPF, Vaca Muerta has enormous potential for obtaining gas —with its 308 trillion cubic feet (TCF)— and has very important oil resources that reach 16,200 million barrels, according to the latest Administration report.
