The IMO Sub-Committee on Ship Design and Construction (SDC 9) agreed to a draft revision of regulations for the reduction of underwater noise from commercial shipping in order to address the adverse effects on marine life.

The project recognizes that commercial shipping is a major contributor to Underwater Radiated Noise (URN) which has adverse effects on critical life functions for a wide range of marine life, including marine mammals, fish and wildlife. of invertebrates, on which many coastal indigenous communities depend for their food, livelihoods and cultures.

Wall Climbing Robot for Ship Inspection Gets ClassNK Approval

The revised standards text provides an overview of approaches applicable to ship designers, builders and operators to reduce radiated underwater noise from any ship. Its goal is to help stakeholders establish mechanisms and programs to reduce noise.

This project will be submitted to the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 80), which meets from July 3 to 7, 2023, for approval.
