The German city of Munich put into operation the first bus powered by photovoltaic panels from Sono Motors. Estimating a saving of 2,500 liters of diesel per year for public coffers.

The Munich City Hall aims to improve the public transport network with more efficient buses and urban vehicles that free the city of NO x and CO 2 particulate pollutants.

Over the last few years, Sono Motors has established itself as one of the leading companies in the development of photovoltaic systems applied to mobility. High-efficiency solar panels that will extend the autonomy of electric cars.

The Sono Sion is their first exclusive vehicle which, according to announced timelines, will soon go into production. Sono Motors accumulates more than 14,000 orders for it, although for the moment it is still in the prototype phase.

This vehicle has 20 semi-flex plates installed on an attached trailer. In a space of 12 square meters they can generate a power of 2,000 watts that will serve to improve the energy balance of the vehicle. The solar charge regulator has an intelligent algorithm that optimizes the energy performance of the photovoltaic modules. Thanks to ultra-fast optimization in the millisecond range and the multi-channel system, the PV performance can be transferred to the bus battery in the best possible way.

Supplying power to the 24-volt battery, the energy generated will aim to supply the necessary resources to run systems such as heating, ventilation and air conditioning, thus freeing the engine from such obligations that will focus on moving the bus. The estimated savings are substantial both in emissions and fuel. For a fleet of about 300 buses, calculations show a potential saving of more than 2,000 tons of CO2 and 2,500 liters of diesel per year.

Of course, both parties have been delighted with the entry into service of this first bus. Laurin Hahn, CEO of Sono Motors, said: “The partnership with MVG illustrates the enormous potential of our unique solar technology which is now being used for the first time ever in a public transport company. This is a milestone in the mission of Sono Motors to make all vehicles solar. Especially in times of rising energy prices and urban emissions, our solar technology offers great added value to public operators. City buses and coaches, as Whether electric or diesel, they offer a lot of space and are on the road every day.The first solar bus trailer for MVG will hit the streets of Munich in the future and will allow MVG passengers to experience solar mobility in the daily use”.
