The Belgian government and the energy company Engie have agreed to extend the useful life of the two Tihange 3 and Doel 4 nuclear power plants by ten more years.
“With these decisions, the expansion work on the two youngest nuclear power plants can start tomorrow,” Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo told a news conference.
The extension is crucial to ensure the security of energy supply for the next ten years. The Belgian government had already decided in March last year that the Tihange 3 reactor near the German border (about 60 kilometers from Aachen) and the Doel 4 reactor near Antwerp should continue to operate until at least the end of 2035.
The implementation was still being negotiated with the Engie company. Previously, a nuclear phaseout was planned for 2025. According to a statement, the goal now is to bring the two reactors back online in the winter of 2026 after the work required for the extension.
