South Korea’s LG Chem has signed an initial agreement with the state of Tennessee to invest $3 billion to build what it describes as the country’s largest battery cathode manufacturing plant.
The Clarksville, Tennessee plant will produce nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum cathode materials and is expected to be ready for the next generation of higher capacity, more stable performance EV batteries.
It was also indicated that the plant will be fully powered by renewable energy and smart technologies for a more sustainable and efficient production process. LG Chem will start construction of the plant in the first quarter of 2023 and aims to launch commercial production by the end of 2025.
According to LG Chem’s statements, the plant will not only help meet the growing demand for battery cathodes in the EV industry, but also allow it to deal with supply risks related to regulations, such as the Law on Reduction of Inflation in the United States.
