Italian company Energy Dome has unveiled an innovative carbon dioxide-based battery that can store renewable energy, the company announced this week.

Its technology consists of storing carbon dioxide and compressing it so that it becomes a liquid, storing the heat generated by the process. When power needs to be supplied, the stored heat heats the liquid CO 2 , turning it back into a gas and pushing it through a turbine, thereby generating electricity.

It is a closed thermodynamic cycle, which does not release carbon into the atmosphere and only requires water and steel. In addition, it allows you to store and use energy from different renewable sources, such as wind or solar.

Energy Dome explains that CO 2 is one of the few gases that can be condensed and stored as a liquid at room temperature. This makes it a perfect fluid to store energy profitably, since it does not require extreme cryogenic temperatures, which makes the process cheaper.

Energy-related CO 2 emissions account for the majority of global emissions, so reducing them has become a priority.

The company explains that, although it is true that the world is moving towards the implementation of renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources, the unpredictable nature of this type of energy limits its widespread use. For this reason, it is essential to articulate profitable and viable technologies for storing renewable energy.

The new technology not only captures part of the CO 2 that we emit into the atmosphere, which already represents an achievement in itself, but also uses it to reduce emissions of that same polluting gas.
