Colombian fertilizer producer Monómeros has signed a memorandum of understanding with Alumbrado Público de Barranquilla (APBAQ), which plans to build Colombia’s first offshore wind farm together with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) off the city of Barranquilla.

Under the memorandum of understanding, Monómeros will build a new plant of about 300 million dollars in which the production of ammonia, one of its main raw materials, which will be fed by the 350 MW, 1 billion dollar offshore wind farm.

Having wind power as the main source to produce ammonia will guarantee the supply of nitrogenous fertilizers for Colombian agriculture and minimize reliance on imported gray ammonia produced with natural gas, according to the company.

The 350 MW offshore wind farm, presented in March, is scheduled to come online in 2026 and become the first offshore wind farm in Colombia.

The Colombian government has just released a roadmap for offshore wind energy, according to which the country has the potential to install almost 50 GW of offshore wind capacity, of which some 27 GW would be most suitable for bottom foundations and 21 GW for floating foundations.

In terms of economic benefits, offshore wind can provide Colombia with more than 27,000 million dollars in investments and create 26,000 jobs by 2050.

The roadmap follows the hydrogen roadmap, launched in the fall of last year, which charts the path for the development and deployment of more green hydrogen projects in the country to reach the goal of having between 1 GW and 3 GW of hydrogen capacity. electrolysis in 2030.

According to the National Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, Colombia could produce 3.2 tons of green hydrogen if it uses all its renewable energy potential and 5.8 tons if it uses all its offshore wind potential.
