Australian miner Jervois Global has decided to restart its São Miguel Paulista (SMP) nickel-cobalt refinery, located in an industrial area of São Paulo, Brazil.

The refinery began operations in 1981 and in September 2022, Jervois obtained an environmental installation license from the São Paulo state environmental regulator, Companhia Ambiental do Estado de São Paulo (CETESB).

In the first stage, the SMP refinery is expected to produce 10,000 metric tons per year (mtpa) of nickel and 2,000 mtpa of cobalt metal cathode starting in the first quarter of 2024.

Jervois said SMP’s historic capacity will eventually reach 25,000 tpy nickel through debottlenecking, including further investment.

“Evaluation of the possible addition of a pressurized oxidative (POX) autoclave is in progress, with its scope and potential release tied to third-party concentrate sale negotiations,” Jervois said in a press release.

The Australian increased the total capital required for the restart of the SMP refinery from the previous estimate of USD 55 million to USD 65 million. In addition, Jervois plans to complete an A$231 million ($150 million) equity capital raising. Such figure would be fully subscribed to fully finance the restart of the SMP nickel-cobalt refinery.
