The Government of Guyana announced that it has approved the construction of a 300 megawatt natural gas combined cycle power plant, which will help cut the cost of electricity bills in half.
The President of Guyana, Irfaan Ali, informed that the company CH4/Lindsayca will be in charge of manufacturing and building the machine, which is expected to be installed by December 2024 and will be managed by the Government of the country.
Ali indicated that the plant will be located in Wales, in West Demerara, in the west of the South American country, under a construction and engineering procurement contract.
Approval for construction of the plant was handled by Stantec and Worley, two global engineering firms with experience in oil and gas, and a three-person evaluation team, which included a representative from Exxon oil company.
For its part, Exxon is expected to ship the pipeline in the fourth quarter of 2024, in order to test the plant by the end of that year.
The Power China company was the second best evaluated to carry out the project for compliance and classification.
Ali also said Power China could be involved in the plant’s development if negotiations fail to finalize the contract with Lindsayca by the end of November.
He explained that the project is expected to distribute energy at a cost of half of what is currently charged in the country.
