Colbún enabled its first distributed generation project on the roof of the services building of the Weir Minerals offices in the commune of San Bernardo in Chile. The recently inaugurated initiative – which will replace an average of 20% of the building’s annual energy consumption – is also Weir Minerals’ first photovoltaic self-generation plant in South America.

It is made up of 140 photovoltaic panels and includes a display panel and real-time monitoring of self-generation, thus allowing permanent operation intelligence to be obtained. The project was developed, during the pandemic, by a multidisciplinary team from Weir Minerals and Colbún Soluciones.

The annual energy generated by the panels will be around 120,000 kWh, which is equivalent to: replacing 20% of the building’s annual energy consumption, avoiding the emission of 48,000 kg CO 2 per year, lighting 70 houses each year or planting 96 trees each year .

It should be noted that Colbún has been supplying electricity to Weir Minerals since 2018 and that this contract was renewed last year; migrating to one provided by 100% renewable sources for its production plant.
