The Airbus company has signed agreements with the airlines Air Canada, Air France-KLM, IAG, Latam Airlines Group, Lufthansa and Virgin Atlantic, to explore techniques for eliminating CO 2 generated by aircraft by capturing it with fans and burying it underground in a safe way. permanent, as reported in a statement.
“These letters of intent mark a concrete step towards the use of this promising technology, both for Airbus’ own decarbonisation plan and for the aviation industry’s ambition to reach the climate goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050.” Executive Vice President of Communications and Corporate Affairs of Airbus, Julie Kitcher, has indicated.
Direct Airborne Carbon Capture and Storage (DACCS) is a technology that filters and removes CO 2 emissions directly from the air using powerful fans. Once extracted from the air, CO 2 is permanently stored in geological deposits.
“As the aviation industry cannot capture CO2 emissions2 released into the atmosphere at their source, a direct airborne carbon capture and storage solution would allow the industry to extract the equivalent amount of emissions from its operations directly from the atmospheric air.
The aviation companies have agreed to negotiate the possible pre-purchase of carbon removal credits starting in 2025 and ending in 2028, as part of the agreements. The credits will be issued by Airbus partner 1PointFive, a subsidiary of Occidental and a global deployment partner of Carbon Egineering, the company that devised the CO 2 capture and burial system.
