Shell Nederland and Shell Overseas Investments, both Shell subsidiaries, have confirmed the start of construction of Holland Hydrogen I, which they claim will be Europe’s largest renewable hydrogen plant once it is operational in 2025.

The 200 MW Holland Hydrogen I electrolysis plant will be built at the Tweede Maasvlakte in the port of Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and will produce up to 60,000 kilograms of renewable hydrogen per day.

Hydrogen production will be fueled by electricity from the 759 MW Hollandse Kust Noord offshore wind farm, which is being developed by Shell and Eneco’s CrossWind consortium and is scheduled for commissioning next year.

The hydrogen is expected to be transported via the HyTransPort pipeline, which will form part of the hydrogen infrastructure in the Netherlands, with a length of about 40 km running from the plant to the Shell Energy and Chemical Park in Rotterdam, where it will replace part of the refinery’s use of gray hydrogen.

This could partially decarbonize the facility’s production of energy products such as gasoline, diesel and jet fuel. As heavy trucks are coming to market and refueling networks grow, renewable hydrogen supply can also target them to help decarbonize commercial road transport, Shell said.

Holland Hydrogen I demonstrates how new energy solutions can work together to meet society’s need for cleaner energy. It is also another example of Shell’s efforts and commitment to become a net-zero emissions company by 2050.
